NJ Veterinarian Stabbed to Death Outside His Home as Son Discovers Him on Front Lawn

Cherry Hill, New Jersey — A New Jersey veterinarian was stabbed to death outside his own home in a planned attack carried out by a man consumed by jealousy over a romantic relationship, according to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office.

Cristian Custodio-Aquino, 28, of Oregon, has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the killing of 45-year-old Michael Anthony. He is expected to be sentenced to 30 years in prison on July 9.

Police responding to Anthony’s home on Sharrowvale Road around 7 a.m. on December 10, 2024, found him suffering from multiple stab wounds to the neck, head and body. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators say Anthony’s teenage son discovered his father lying facedown in the front yard after he failed to return from a walk and called 911.

A pair of eyeglasses left near the body carried the suspect’s DNA, and Anthony’s blood was later found inside a vehicle linked to Custodio-Aquino. Authorities say the attack stemmed from jealousy, as the suspect was reportedly upset that Anthony was dating his former boyfriend. Officials described the killing as a calculated act, saying Custodio-Aquino waited outside the home before ambushing Anthony as he stepped outside.

The suspect fled across the country following the attack and was arrested roughly three months later in Fresno, California. While evading capture, he reportedly attempted to sell his vehicle and searched online for news coverage of the case.

Prosecutors say the guilty plea marks a major step toward accountability, though they acknowledge nothing can fully address the loss felt by Anthony’s family and community.

Anthony was the owner of a veterinary practice in Haddon Heights, where he was remembered for his compassion toward animals and the people who loved them. Colleagues described him as dedicated and deeply respected throughout his career.

Outside of work, those close to him said his greatest source of pride was his two sons. He was also known for his love of running and music.
