DoorDash Driver Shoots and Kills Amazon Worker Over a Joke About His Height, Prosecutors Say

MATTESON, Illinois — A 26-year-old Amazon employee is dead after a DoorDash delivery driver allegedly shot him multiple times in a parking lot — all because of a joke about his height.

Devonta Hodge, 33, of Indiana, is charged with one count of homicide in the June 28 death of Dylan Perkins.

The shooting happened just before 11 p.m. outside the Amazon Fulfillment Center on Vollmer Road in Matteson, a suburb about 30 miles south of Chicago.

What Prosecutors Say Happened

Perkins was on break with two co-workers when Hodge arrived to make a delivery. According to prosecutors, Perkins made a joking comment about Hodge’s height as he walked past.

After completing the delivery, Hodge was approached by Perkins. During the confrontation, Hodge allegedly pushed him away twice — then pulled out a gun and shot him multiple times before fleeing the scene.

Officers arrived minutes later and found Perkins suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his torso. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

Arrest and Court Hearing

The shooting was captured on surveillance footage. Hodge was identified as the DoorDash driver and arrested on June 30 after he voluntarily went to the Matteson police station.

Prosecutors noted that Hodge holds a valid Firearm Owners Identification card but does not have a concealed carry permit. He also has a prior conviction for unlawful use of a weapon.

Cook County Judge Torrie Luciana Corbin ordered Hodge held without bond, writing that he “demonstrated emotional immaturity in how to resolve conflicts.”

Hodge is currently held in Cook County Jail. His next court date is July 16.
