Teen saving for college dies after car crashes into Texas bakery where she worked

ATASCOCITA, Texas — A 19-year-old bakery worker who was quietly saving money for college never made it home from her shift on Tuesday.

The incident happened around 3:11 p.m. on June 30 at Nothing Bundt Cakes on 19250 W Lake Houston Parkway. According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, a 77-year-old driver was attempting to park outside the bakery when his foot slipped off the brake and pressed the accelerator. The front of his car struck the bakery’s entrance with enough force to send workers running.

A Young Life Full of Promise

The victim was identified as Zion Branch, 19. She was found with no signs of life at the scene.

Family members said Branch had graduated from Sconzo Early College High School just last year. She had not been at the bakery long — only a short time — but she showed up every shift with a purpose. She was saving every dollar to enroll in college as a junior that fall.

A customer inside the bakery was also hurt during the crash and taken to a nearby hospital.

The Moment Everything Changed

Co-workers described a terrifying few minutes after impact. Workers initially thought the building itself was collapsing. They fled to the back of the store, then rushed to the front to find their teammates.

“We ran around to the front screaming for them,” said employee Liliana Trevino. “We ended up hearing our manager, but we couldn’t find our co-worker. Our manager said, ‘She’s not with us anymore.'”

Driver Stayed; Investigation Now Open

The 77-year-old driver remained on the scene and showed no signs of intoxication. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office vehicular crimes division has opened an investigation.

Nothing Bundt Cakes released a statement saying the company is “heartbroken” and confirmed the location is temporarily closed.

“There’s a lot of people here that their lives changed,” said HCSO Maj. Anthony McConnell.

Zion Branch was 19. She had a plan, a dream, and a future in front of her.
