12-Year-Old Boy Loses Dangerous Amount of Blood After Shark Bites Through His Leg in the Bahamas — His Brother's Split-Second Decision May Have Kept Him Alive

A 12-year-old boy from Friendswood, Texas is recovering at home after suffering a serious shark bite during a family vacation in the Bahamas — an attack that doctors say could have turned fatal without immediate action from his older brother.

Parker Roll and his 16-year-old brother Jack were swimming across a shallow bay near one of the islands the family had traveled to by boat. Without warning, a shark — described by Parker as having a head over a foot wide — clamped down on his calf.

“I just remember looking down and seeing a head, over a foot wide, just clamped around my calf. At that point I didn’t feel it, so I just walked onto the side, but after that I couldn’t walk.”

Jack immediately saw the severity of the wound — a massive gash on Parker’s shin — and reacted without hesitation. He removed his own swimsuit and used it to apply direct pressure and stop the bleeding, a move that medical professionals would later recognize as critical.

“I was like, ‘That needs to be stopped.’ So I took my swimsuit off and immediately ran over there, wrapped it up and tried to stop the bleeding.”

The family then faced a grueling 60-mile boat ride back to shore before Parker could receive any professional medical care. An ambulance was waiting at the dock to rush him to a hospital.

Parker did not hold back when describing just how close things came to a very different outcome.

“I’m very thankful he did because at the rate I was losing blood, it could have been fatal. Because, you know, I don’t have that much blood. I’m very little.”

— Parker Roll

Doctors have told the family that Parker is expected to walk again within two to three weeks, though his recovery will be evaluated further once his stitches are removed. As of now, he is resting at home in Friendswood.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable dangers that can arise even in seemingly calm, shallow waters — and the difference a calm, quick-thinking bystander can make when every second counts.
