DETROIT, MICHIGAN — Michigan is heading into one of the most hazardous stretches of weather it has seen in years, with an oppressive heat dome settling over the entire state starting Monday and staying locked in through the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Forecasters warn that what makes this week uniquely dangerous is not just the heat or the storms — it is both happening at the same time, day after day, with no meaningful relief in between.
Heat indices are expected to climb into triple-digit territory across much of Michigan beginning Monday, June 29, and remain there through at least Friday, July 3. That is five straight days of potentially life-threatening heat, and officials are urging residents not to underestimate it.
Tuesday Is the Day to Watch
While the entire week carries risk, Tuesday, June 30 is being flagged as the single most dangerous day of the period. A combination of dangerous heat and severe storm potential across the northern part of the state makes it a day that demands preparation, not guessing.
Wednesday through Friday hold the same serious designation, with severe thunderstorm chances spreading south into the Lower Peninsula as the week progresses. The July 4th weekend itself is not expected to bring relief — heat and storm chances continue through Saturday.
Heat Can Kill — Know the Warning Signs
Doctors and emergency officials stress that back-to-back days of extreme heat create a compounding threat. The body never fully recovers overnight when temperatures stay elevated, making each consecutive day more dangerous than the last.
Heat exhaustion can develop quickly and silently. Symptoms include heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, and muscle cramps. If ignored, it can progress to heat stroke — a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate medical attention.
Elderly residents, young children, outdoor workers, and anyone without reliable air conditioning are at the highest risk this week.
Drink water consistently throughout the day. Do not wait for thirst. Check on neighbors. Know where your nearest cooling center is — and use it.
This week, staying informed is not optional. It could save your life.
