New Jersey Faces 100-Degree Heat Wave Next Week — Officials Warn of Dangerous Heat Index That Could Force Emergency Alerts

New Jersey residents can expect a wet and unsettled weekend before conditions take a dangerous turn next week, as forecasters are now warning of a potentially record-breaking heat event that could push temperatures to 100 degrees or higher across parts of the state.

Showers and storms this weekend

A weak cold front moving through the region will continue to bring scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms through Saturday. Southern New Jersey will see the heaviest activity. While severe storms are not expected, gusty winds are possible with some thunderstorm cells.

Saturday temperatures will top out in the 70s to low 80s in southern areas. Showers may linger into Saturday night before conditions begin to improve on Sunday as high pressure builds in. Monday and Tuesday are expected to be dry and comfortable — but that relief will be short-lived.

The real threat: an intense heat wave arriving Wednesday

Meteorologists are tracking a powerful upper-level ridge developing over the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic that will drive temperatures well into the 90s to near 100 degrees starting Wednesday, with Thursday and Friday shaping up as the most dangerous days of the stretch.

Key heat threat numbers:

— 70%–90% probability of highs exceeding 95°F on Thursday and Friday
— Southern NJ: 60%–80% chance of hitting 100°F on Thursday
— Heat index could exceed 105°F in some areas
— Extreme heat warnings may be issued by forecasters

Officials warn that a heat index above 105 degrees creates life-threatening conditions, especially for elderly residents, young children, outdoor workers, and those without air conditioning. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, and check on vulnerable neighbors as the week progresses.

Stay alert for heat advisories and emergency alerts from local authorities as the forecast becomes clearer heading into midweek.
