Dangerous Heat Settles Over Houston This Week — Here Is What You Need to Know Before Going Outside

Feels-like temperatures are expected to climb into the low 100s each afternoon, and overnight relief is not coming anytime soon.

A dangerous stretch of heat is settling over Southeast Texas this week, and residents who spend time outdoors without taking precautions could face serious health consequences.

A strengthening ridge of high pressure is pushing out the wetter weather pattern Houston saw recently. That shift means most neighborhoods across the region will stay almost completely dry through the weekend, and there is nothing on the horizon to break the heat.

Afternoon highs will sit in the low to mid 90s all week, but the real danger lies in the heat index. Once humidity is factored in, it will feel like the low 100s — between 100 and 107 degrees Fahrenheit — during peak afternoon hours. Overnight lows are only expected to drop into the mid to upper 70s, meaning there will be little recovery time for the body between hot days.

Heat safety steps residents should take now:

  • Drink water consistently throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing
  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activity between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
  • Take shade or air conditioning breaks regularly
  • Never leave children or pets inside a parked vehicle, even briefly

Conditions at Gulf-facing beaches carry additional risk this week. A high rip current risk remains in place, meaning dangerous swimming conditions can develop even when the weather appears calm. Beachgoers should swim near a lifeguard, stay away from piers and jetties, and respect any warning flags posted.

A Small Craft Advisory also remains in effect through early Monday afternoon due to gusty winds on the water.

No tropical development is expected in the Atlantic over the next seven days.

Houston 7-day forecast:

  • Monday: High 93°F / Low 78°F
  • Tuesday: High 94°F / Low 76°F
  • Wednesday: High 94°F / Low 75°F
  • Thursday: High 94°F / Low 76°F
  • Friday: High 93°F / Low 77°F
  • Saturday: High 93°F / Low 78°F
  • Sunday: High 94°F / Low 79°F

The only small break in the pattern comes Sunday night, when a 20 percent rain chance will bring a slight possibility of showers, though significant relief is not expected.
